Never mind the slow economic recovery and lingering doubts about the future. Indians are prepared to let the good times roll this festive season. According to a recent PayPal survey, the average festive spend this year is around Rs 9,600. In fact, 70% of the respondents said they were keen to keep the holiday spirit alive, and 45% expected to spend more than they did last year. The survey, conducted in August 2009, covered over 1,200 respondents in India, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
Bucking the trend
Flying first class may have seemed frivolous in recent times, but some flight routes have bucked the trend. According to the International Air Transport Association, the number of international premium class passengers on board flights within and to the Southwest Pacific region have gone up since July 2008. On the other hand, the Asia-Pacific market was badly hit.
No slowdown for pocket money
According to Cartoon Network, Indian children have received Rs 664 crore by way of pocket money or cash gifts so far this year, up 39% compared with 2008. The survey, titled New Generations 2009, interviewed 3,431 children aged 7-14 years, hailing from mid- to high-income families in the metros as well as 11 tier II cities. The respondents received an average monthly pocket money of Rs 258.
