The cover on investment strategies for this year (Unlocking Wealth, January 2013) was extensive and composite of the major investment classes. That the Sensex will touch 21,000 seems probable considering that the it breached the 20,000 level in the first month itself. However, it is also still a volatile time in the equity market and investors should consider balancing their investments with debt instruments, which could be a good option if inflation falls and the Reserve Bank of India does indeed lower interest rates. Moreover, as the story explains, much will still depend on the moves made by the government, in terms of economic reforms, improving investments and the domestic monetary policy.

The article on correlation between assets to determine price (Linked Returns, January 2013) was striking. This gives us a new parameter to judge valuation of assets, particularly gold and silver. Though correlation of gold with US dollar and oil is widely used to predict the former's price movement, the gold-silver ratio is new to me. Of late, experts have been saying that there is little room for gold prices to go up. The gold-silver ratio of 53.9, as mentioned in the article, however, hints at another increase in gold price this year. The gold-silver ratio is a good way of determining if the precious metal is overvalued or undervalued.

The story on where to make property investments in 2013 was highly informative (Spotting Real Gems, January 2013). While it is common knowledge that investing in realty is bound to profit in the long term, it is often hard for retail investors to buy land beyond the state they live in. Such knowledge, or maybe even more, is necessary to make a prudent decision on buying property.

The story on stock valuation (Beyond the Obvious, January 2013), as opposed to just looking at price, is a good one for beginners. Retail investors don't always consider technical indicators, such as price-to-earning ratio or return on equity, when investing.
