If you don't have a smart TV, turning it into one is a simple task. Plugging in a dongle such as Chromecast, Teewe or Amkette's Evo TV will do the job. While we have reviewed Teewe and Evo TV in the past, we are now testing Google's Chromecast.

Chromecast is a thumb-drive-like device that plugs into the HDMI port of the TV. It requires power and can be plugged with the data cable to the USB port on the TV itself.

After plugging it into the TV, it asks you to download the Chromecast app on your smartphone. If you have a high-speed wireless Internet connection, pairing is pretty simple.

Once paired, it duplicates the phone's display on the TV screen wirelessly. So be it browsing the web, playing games or checking your social networking sites, everything appears on the big screen. Within the app, there are options such as discover apps that takes you to apps on the Google Play Store that are compatible with the Chromecast.

The Google Chromecast isn't restricted to just Android smartphones. There is a Chromecast extension for the desktop browser. Using the "cast" button on the top of the page, the YouTube videos will be played directly on the TV. It also mirrors the laptop display.

Plus: Compact, affordable

Minus: Needs WiFi connectivity, limited usage

Bag it or junk it: Affordable but requires WiFi connectivity to pair.
