Bag it or junk it: Expensive proposition with some outdated features

The market for home entertainment projectors is on the rise and projectors are getting affordable by the day. Espon's EH-TW550, a 3D enabled projector, also has its eyes set on the home entertainment segment.

This light weight projector has got a black matte finish. There is a sliding lens cover along with archaic keystone adjustments and regular controls on the top. All the connectivity ports including HDMI, VGA, S-video and a USB are placed at the back. The projector can be connected to the network using an Ethernet port and there is wireless connectivity.

Set-up is child's play and can be completed within a minute. However, it took much longer for this DLP-based projector to power up. The company claims it fires up in 30 seconds, but for us it took a good couple of minutes.

Once done, the projection was superb. It has got a 3000 ANSI lumens lamp which used in regular mode offers excellent brightness, colour and contrast. The projector supports USB display where it can be directly connected to a computer using the USB cable. But we were not able to test this feature. The benefit of having a USB is to directly plug and play the content. However, Epson has restricted this feature to photo playback and this is a big letdown.

The 3D projector and supports active shutter 3D glasses, but they come for Rs 6,399 each.

  • Controls on the top make it easy to operate
  • All ports are at the back
  • Lamp takes a couple of minutes to heat up
  • It generates quite a bit of heat and noise
