Extending the decline for the second consecutive session, the domestic markets edged lower in trade on Wednesday as a steep fall in China's markets revived global risk aversion, while caution ahead of key corporate earnings such as Wipro , Idea Cellular also weighed on sentiment.
The S&P BSE Sensex wiped out all its early gaines and fell 19.17 points to end at 27,287.66 as pharma and banking stocks failed to shape up.
The broader CNX Nifty settled the day just a tad above 8,250 after going as high as 8294.40 points earlier in the day.
Market breadth remained positive with 18 of the 30 Sensex stocks trading in green.
Here are top stocks that were in focus today:
- Federal Bank: Shares of Federal Bank slipped nearly 15 per cent in trade on Wednesday after the company reported a whopping 32.88 per cent fall in its net profit to Rs 161.28 crore in the September quarter, compared to Rs 240.30 crore during the same period of the previous fiscal year. In intraday trade, the stock tumbled 14.67 per cent to Rs 55.80, on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The scrip closed at Rs 57.50, down 12.08 per cent.
- HDFC Bank: Shares of HDFC Bank ended on a flat note at Rs 1094.80 after the private sector player reported 20.5 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 2,869.5 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2015-16. The bank had earned Rs 2,381.5 crore profit in the same July-September quarter of the last fiscal, 2014-15.
- Reliance Capital: Shares of Reliance Capital surged over 4 per cent in trade on Wednesday after Reliance Capital Asset Management (RCAM) announced acquisition of Goldman Sachs' onshore asset management business for Rs 243 crore in an all-cash deal as yet another foreign player exits the Rs 13 lakh crore Indian MF market. The stock ended the day at Rs 411.85, up 3.17 per cent up after hitting an intraday high of Rs 416.80, up 4.39 per cent, on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
- Bajaj Auto: Shares of Bajaj Auto ended the day 3.28 per cent up at Rs 2518.25 after rallying as much as 3.9 per cent in trade on Wednesday after the two-wheeler maker reported 57.9 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase in net profit at Rs 933.06 crore.
- Sugar stocks: Sugar stocks such as Dalmia Bharat Sugar, Dhampur Sugar Mills, Dwarikesh Sugar, Oudh Sugar Mills, Triveni Engineering, Upper Ganges Sugar and Uttam Sugar Mills continued to surge for the second day, and rose up to 7 per cent in Wednesday's trade as crushing season for cane in Uttar Pradesh and Maharasthra - the two biggest sugar-producing states in the country - is set to begin on time this year.
- Hero MotoCorp: Shares of Hero MotoCorp surged over 2 per cent in trade on Tuesday as the country's largest two-wheeler maker reported a marginal 1.13 per cent rise in standalone net profit at Rs 772.06 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 763.37 crore during the same period of the previous fiscal. The scrip ended the day on a flat note after rising as much as Rs 2665, up 2.30 per cent.
- Mphasis: Shares of IT firm Mphasis surged over 13 per cent in trade on Wednesday after the company reported a 15.30 per cent increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 184.72 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2015. The stock ended the day 9.60 per cent up at Rs 458.25 after hitting an intraday high of Rs 475, up 13.6 per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
