Chinese police crack down on protesters as seeking freedom from zero-Covid norms. Protests have been spreading to different cities of China. Police and men in white hazmat suits stopped students outside Xinhua university and other protest centres and scanned their mobile phones for pictures and information about protests. This is in violation of Chinese laws but the surveillence state is leaving no stone unturned to crack down on protesters. The volcano had been bubbling for months after more than two years of intense Covid restrictions but erupted after 10 people were killed in an Urumqi high-rise building fire in the restive Xinjiang province in the west.
