US President Donald Trump has confirmed what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been saying for long – that foreign powers have continuously tried to interfere and influence the Indian democratic process. In an address on February 19, Trump hinted at poll meddling by the administration of his predecessor Joe Biden. “Why do we need to spend $21 million on voter turnout in India? I guess they (Biden administration) were trying to get somebody else elected. We have got to tell the Indian Government. This is a total breakthrough.” PM Modi has raised the spectre of foreign meddling in a speech last October. He also took a jab at ‘foreign powers’ being ineffective for the first time in his traditional address ahead of the Budget Session of the Parliament.
