Despite promises of free and clean water by the AAP government, Delhi is facing severe water shortages. Street wars have erupted as tankers struggle to meet the demand, and the notorious tanker mafia exploits the situation for profit. India Today's undercover team exposed the extent of this illegal racket, operating without checks. In Sangam Vihar, they met Ritesh, a tanker operator, and documented the illicit filling of water tanks from illegal borewells. Similarly, Mohan in Sangam Vihar and Ramesh in Wazirabad were caught selling large quantities of water from unauthorized sources. These operators admitted to extracting water from deep borewells, depleting Delhi's groundwater levels. The tanker mafia's activities, including filling water tankers from illegal tube wells in the Yamuna Khadar area, highlight the urgent need for action. The big question remains: who will rein in Delhi's water looters, or will the mafia continue to exploit the city's precious water resources?
