
With the IndiGo chaos turning the global spotlight on the fragility of the Indian aviation system, the government has stated that it is encouraging more airlines to start operations in the country. The latest industry figures from the regulator – DGCA – show IndiGo had nearly 65% market share in October. Responding to a query by Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said the ministry was already working on changing the structure of the industry where just two airlines hold 91% of the market share, adding that India certainly wanted more airlines and had the capacity for five “big airlines”.
