A political face-off has erupted after U.S. President Donald Trump praised India’s voter ID system and called for a similar requirement in the United States. U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor backed Trump’s position, saying voter ID is essential and said the United States should adopt a similar requirement when people vote. Gor highlighted India’s large electorate and low share of postal voting while calling voter ID a non-partisan issue. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera hit back with a sarcastic response, challenging the U.S. to adopt India’s electoral practices, including EVMs and S.I.R. Khera also took a swipe at Trump’s comments on voter identification. The exchange comes amid an intensifying debate in the U.S. over election reforms, voter ID requirements and electoral integrity, with India’s voting system now at the centre of the political conversation.
