Public sector power companies will donate Rs 25 crore towards rebuilding
flood-hit Uttarakhand.
According to a statement, Minister of State for Power (Independent Charge) Jyotiraditya Scindia took the decision in a meeting of the heads of the public sector units in the power sector.
The nine PSUs will select the projects in consultation with the state government, the statement added.
Unprecedented heavy rains in the state triggered landslides and floods, washing away thousands of houses and roads and cutting communication links in large areas of Uttarakhand.
Hundreds of
people have been killed, especially in the temple town Kedarnath, over ten days ago. Thousands of people, including pilgrims, have already been rescued from the area.
According to M. Shashidhar Reddy, vice-chairman, National Disaster Management Authority: "As of now the death toll is 560 and it might go up to 1,000 as there is eight to 10 feet high debris to be cleared. So death toll might rise as there are chances of dead bodies trapped under the debris."
