The Delhi High Court on Wednesday rejected the bail pleas of
DMK MP
Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar, both accused in
2G spectrum allocation scam case.
Dismissing the bail applications, Justice Ajit Bharihoke, who had reserved his decision on May 30 after hearing detailed arguments on their bail applications, said there was "sufficient evidence to show criminal conspiracy".
Kanimozhi's mother Rajathi Ammal, who was present in the court, burst into tears following the decision. She has been staying in the national capital since her daughter's troubles started last month.
A number of DMK senior leaders, including T.R. Baalu and T.K.S. Elangovan, were also present in court for the vital decision. Reacting to the court decision, Baalu said, "We will move the Supreme Court soon."
Justice Bharihoke had recently dismissed bail pleas of
five corporate honchos , including Unitech Group MD
Sanjay Chandra and Reliance ADAG MD Gautam Doshi in the case, saying there were chances that they might influence the witnesses.
Kanimozhi, the daughter of DMK chief
M. Karunanidhi , and Kumar were named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly receiving a kickback to the tune of Rs 200 crore. Both have been lodged in Tihar Central Jail since May 20.
Both Kanimozhi and Kumar have 20 per cent stake each in Kalaignar TV, which allegedly received over Rs 200 crore through a circuitous route from Shahid Balwa promoted DB Realty.
Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal, who has been left out of the list of accused, owns remaining 60 per cent shares in the channel.
Kanimozhi and Kumar had moved the high court on May 23 challenging the trial court's decision of rejecting their bail pleas saying the offence attributed to them was grave and the possibility of influencing the witnesses could not be ruled out.
