Google Inc has bought a 6.3 per cent stake in Taiwanese microchip maker Himax Display, a subsidiary of Himax Technologies Inc.

The company makes chips used in the search giant's Google Glass device, which can shoot photos, videos and access the Internet and is currently in testing stages.

According to the deal, Google will get a 6.3 per cent stake Himax Display in the form of preferred shares and have an option to buy more shares that could eventually raise the stake to 14.8 per cent.

Neither of the companies put a figure to the value of the deal, expected to close this quarter.

Himax Technologies now owns 81.5 per cent of the microchip maker and will remain the subsidiary's majority shareholder.
