Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale had written to former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in April 2015 demanding  to increase the width of the foot-over bridge where the stampede took place., India Today reported. Former Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu had cited cash crunch.

"Agreeing to all requests is not always possible due to paucity of finances, operational constraints," Prabhu had said in response to Shewale.

Railways, however, has clarified on the allegations by Shiv Sena MPs, saying that that the project was sanctioned in 2016 and the tender work is underway.

Two Shiv Sena Members of Parliament, in separate letters had warned the Railway Minister that the Parel-Elphinstone bridge was incapable of handling passenger traffic.
