Speed Boost
The Katra-Banihal rail journey is getting faster as Railways raises the maximum permissible speed on the 111-km mountain route to 100 kmph. The upgrade comes after completing all safety checks, reducing travel time across one of India’s most challenging railway corridors.

Mountain Marvel
Cut through some of the toughest Himalayan terrain, the Katra-Banihal section is more than just a railway line. Built across deep valleys, steep slopes and complex geological zones, it represents one of Indian Railways’ most ambitious engineering challenges under the USBRL project.

Bridge Wonders
The route carries engineering landmarks that have captured global attention. From the Chenab Railway Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, to the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, the section showcases extraordinary infrastructure built in extreme conditions.

Tunnel Network
Behind the faster trains lies a massive underground effort. The Katra-Banihal section features 33 tunnels carved through the mountains, allowing trains to navigate the difficult Pir Panjal and lower Himalayan ranges while maintaining safer and smoother connectivity.

Kashmir Link
The speed upgrade strengthens the dream behind the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link — connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through an all-weather rail network. The improved service is expected to benefit passengers, tourism and regional economic activity.

Vande Bharat
The route gained national attention after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express in June 2025. With the latest speed enhancement, the strategically important railway corridor moves closer to delivering faster and more comfortable journeys.
