How did you get into scripophily?
I belong to a typical bania family, traditionally known for their fascination with stock markets, and I was no exception. The creative illustrations, ornate designs and the antique look of the old share certificates attracted me and I started collecting them.
What was your first investment?
My first investment was in Tata Iron & Steel Company, now Tata Steel. This was the first certificate that I collected and I still have the original with me.
Do you also sell certificates?
so these old papers are valuable. This has converted my hobby into a profitable venture.
What price do old share certificates fetch on an average?
If you sell it as scrap then a bagful of old certificates will fetch you Rs 5 per kg. But the least I’ve made by selling a single certificate on eBay is Rs 100, going up to Rs 1,800. Collectors and like-minded people are just beginning to show interest in this hobby, which I think will pick up, as will the prices.
Can this be a standalone business?
It’s funny, but I’ve made money by selling shares of defunct and bankrupt companies, while their investors find it tough to recover even a single paise. So, yes, there is a business potential, but it takes time and effort to rummage through scrap and junk to collect such certificates. I will stick to my core business and use it as a platform to make this hobby profitable.
