Shoe shine

When Mumbai-based 19-year-old Samrit Shah painted his sports shoes for fun, he didn’t realise how quickly the concept would catch on. Today, along with friend Himay Kumbhani, he runs Toe 2 Head, a shoe customising outfit.

How did you think of painting shoes?

The idea was borne out of boredom. One day, in December last year, I was idle at home and decided to paint my white sports shoes. My friends loved the design and wanted me to work on their shoes as well. Soon, my friend Himay joined me and we launched Toe 2 Head.

Have you had any training in designing?

No. In fact, Himay and I are currently studying liberal arts at the Foundation for Liberal and Management Education, Pune.

How has the response been?

Very enthusiastic. We work on 5-10 pairs a month, usually during the night because we have classes in the afternoon. These are mainly orders from college students or parents who want to gift unique shoes to their children. Now, however, we are beginning to get bulk orders. We are working on 120 pairs for MTV India and also have some orders from Muscat, Oman, and the UK.

How much do you charge for each pair?

We charge Rs 2,500-3,000 per pair, depending on the design. We use special waterproof paint, which we get from Spain.

What are your future plans?

So far, we’ve been operating from Pune or our homes in Mumbai. But now that we plan to expand our designing to shirts, bags, caps etc, we are thinking of opening a studio. We’ve also found a sponsor, who is investing in various promotional activities, including setting up a Website for us. He will also be our coordinator in Mumbai and help get more orders.
