BSE Sensex, Nifty end flat in volatile trading session

The 50-share CNX Nifty also ended the day at 8,365.65, down 0.10 per cent against its previous close.

After a weak start, equity benchmarks traded volatile on Tuesday and closed flat in the end.

The 30-share BSE Sensex resumed the day slightly lower at 27,663 and touched a high of 27,872.23 before closing the day at 27,645.53, 0.15 per cent lower than its previous close of 27,687.30.

On similar lines, the 50-share CNX Nifty also ended the day at 8,365.65, down 0.10 per cent against its previous close.

Overall, the market breadth remained strong on the BSE as 1,453 stocks ended with gains while 1,289 closed with losses. However, advances to decline ratio for Nifty remained at 21:29.

Among the Nifty stocks, Hero MotoCorp (up 2.32 per cent), UltraTech Cement (up 1.79 per cent), Zee Entertainment (up 1.48 per cent), Infosys (up 1.46 per cent) and Wipro (up 1.43 per cent) were among top gainers. However, HDFC, Tata Motors, ONGC, Cairn India and Mahindra & Mahindra ended the day lower by 2.23 per cent, 2.10 per cent, 1.52 per cent, 1.40 per cent and 1.32 per cent respectively.

Among the sectoral indices on the Bombay Stock Exchange, BSE IT index, BSE TECk, BSE Consumer Durables and BSE Realty index jumped 0.73 per cent, 0.73 per cent, 0.54 per cent and 0.47 per cent, respectively. However, BSE Auto index, BSE Oil & Gas index and BSE FMCG index ended the day 0.77 per cent, 0.45 per cent and 0.22 per cent lower than their previous close.

"In absence of any major positive cues, participants preferred to book some profit off the table after two days of rally. However, downside remained capped due to buying in select index heavyweights. In line with benchmark index, majority of sectoral indices ended flat to slightly on the negative side," said Jayant Manglik, president, retail distribution, Religare Securities.

Asian markets also ended the day in green. Nikkei 225 and Hang Seng gained 0.68 per cent and 0.37 per cent, respectively.

Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services, DLF, Gabriel India, Bharat Forge, Bajaj Finserv, Wabco India and Tata Steel may announce their earnings on Wednesday.
