Mutual fund folios rise to all-time high of 48.9 million

Mutual fund folios rose by 2.6 per cent, quarter-on-quarter, to an all-time record high of 48.9 million in June 2016.

Mutual fund folios rise to all-time high of 48.9 million

Mutual fund folios rose by 2.6 per cent, quarter-on-quarter, to an all-time record high of 48.9 million in June 2016.

As per CMIE data, the rise in mutual fund folios was driven by an increase in retail folios, which account for 90 per cent of the total folios. They rose by 2.6 per cent to 46.5 million by June-end 2016, highest since the data is available. Corporate folios rose by 2.5 per cent to 0.5 million. Folios of high net worth individuals (HNIs) rose by 5.8 per cent to 1.9 million. HNIs are defined as individuals investing Rs 5 lakh and above. Folios of banks/financial institutions increased enormously by 42.7 per cent whereas folios of FIIs fell sharply by 4.9 per cent as compared to the preceding quarter.

By type of mutual fund, on a q-o-q basis, equity-oriented mutual funds folios rose by 1.7 per cent to 36.6 million for the quarter ending June. Under equity oriented mutual funds, retail folios rose by 1.7 per cent to 35.4 million. HNI folios rose by four per cent to 0.9 million. However, corporate folios fell marginally by 0.2 per cent to 0.3 million.

Liquid and money market fund folios rose sharply by 55.7 per cent to 0.6 million in the June quarter. Within liquid and money market funds, retail folios rose by 69.2 per cent to 0.5 million. HNI folios increased by 13.2 per cent to 0.07 million and folios of corporate increased by 15.1 per cent to 0.03 million.

The number of folios in debt-oriented scheme rose by 4.1 per cent to 8.2 million in the period under review. Within these funds, retail folios rose by 3.8 per cent to 7.4 million. HNI folios rose by 6.1 per cent to 0.7 million and corporate folios rose by 5.2 per cent to 0.1 million.

Balance fund folios rose by 5.3 per cent to 2.6 million. Under balanced funds, retail folios rose by 4.7 per cent to 2.4 million. HNI and corporate folios rose by 14.8 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.

A folio number is a unique number identifying an investor's account with the mutual fund.
