Modicare: Govt's flagship National Health Protection Scheme explained

The NDA goverment's ambitious National Health Protection Scheme was approved by the Union government. Dubbed as the world's largest government-funded health care programme, the mega plan will cover 40% of the population with pre-existing diseases. Some highlights:

 

  • The National Health Protection Scheme or 'Modicare' promises universal access to healthcare.
  • It is supposed to be the world's largest health care initiative.
  • Modicare is set to roll out later this year.
 
What is the scale of the scheme?
  • To help 100 million families with an annual insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh per family
  • To impact the lives of 500 million poor and underprivileged people
  • To cover secondary and tertiary healthcare, mostly hospital care
  • Govt to set up 1.5 lakh health & wellness centres
  • Each centre will cater to 5,000 people
Services will include:
  • Maternal and Child Healthcare
  • Mental Health
  • Vaccinations
  • Screening Facilities
  • The scheme will cover all pre-existing diseases
  • Pre-hospitalisation expenses of 3 days and post-hospitalisation for 15 days will be covered
 
What is the cost?
  • Rs 16,000 crore has been earmarked for 2018-19 and 2019-20
  • The premium are expected to be shared on a 60:40 basis between the Centre and states.
  • As per Niti Aayog, the premium per family will be around Rs 1,000-1,200
