The company was set up in order to import and sell finished NESTLÉ products in the domestic market. The government of India in 1959 came out with policy changes that emphasized the need for production locally in India. Thus, NESTLÉ India was formed. In 1961, the company opened its initial production facility in Moga, Punjab. The Indian government wanted NESTLÉ India to develop the region's milk economy. Six years later, NESTLÉ India Limited started operations at its second plant located in Choladi, Tamil Nadu. 1982 was a monumental year for NESTLÉ India as it launched Maggi noodles in India which would find incredible success in the country. The firm opened the door of its seventh production factory in Patnanagar, Uttarakhand in 2006. In June 2015, NESTLÉ India faced a major challenge when it was forced to recall its Maggi instant noodles from the market after they were found to contain excessive levels of lead. The ban on Maggi noodles was revoked in September 2015. As of March 2023, NESTLÉ India employs over 8,000 individuals and operates manufacturing plants in locations across the country.
