Google phone app will now let users record calls of unknown contacts. Earlier, Google had only rolled out the call recording feature for the numbers that are saved in your contact list, but now you can even record calls from unknown numbers. The new feature has started appearing on the Google phone app for some users. However, call recording is not permissible in every location, so a lot depends on where you are. The feature is available in India though.

XDA developers had first spotted the feature in January through an APK teardown. It took Google a couple of months to roll out the feature to non-beta users. So if you enable this feature, you can automatically record calls from numbers that are not saved in your contact list.

However, If you thought you can sneakily record the conversation, you are highly mistaken. When the recording starts automatically, the caller and the receiver will get a notification that the recording has started. The feature can be used to take notes or if you are conducting a telephonic interview, But if you want to conspire against somebody by recording their call details, you may not be successful. Google had reminded its users to use the feature wisely and not only when it is needed. In some areas, the call recording feature might not be available due to privacy settings. But so far no such rules have been imposed in India.

The feature is only available to Xiaomi and Nokia phones. If you are using any other Android devices, you may download the Google phone app but still not get the feature. Last year in May, Nokia had officially rolled out this feature for Android One users. "This feature has been a top request from users in India, and we are pleased to bring many Android One Nokia smartphone users this addition today," Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global had said in a statement.
