Story highlights
  • Mentions of model numbers for Pixel 6 series spotted in Android 12 Beta.
  • One model number said to be Google's first foldable smartphone codenamed Passport.
  • Pixel 5a 5G model number mention also spotted in Android 12 Beta.

Google released a public beta build of Android 12 at its IO 2021 keynote, and the new OS is now available for Pixels as well as several OEM devices. The company is likely to launch several Pixel phones, including the new Pixel 6 series, and if rumours are to be believed, then the first Pixel foldable smartphone from Google may launch later this year.

Folks at 9to5google have found model numbers of four Made by Google devices that are more than likely to be unveiled this year. The company has already confirmed Google Pixel 5a 5G will launch in select markets later this year. Now, the model numbers found are said to be from the Pixel 6 series as well as the first Pixel foldable phone. The model numbers found include G4S1M, said to launch as the Pixel 5a 5G, GR1YH, and GF5KQ, said to be devices from the Pixel 6 series. Lastly, the GPQ72 model number is said to be a foldable phone from Google, codenamed Passport.

Notably, the report claims that the model numbers spotted are specific to Japanese variants of the Pixel 6 and other phones. It adds that Pixel Passport, the first rumoured foldable phone, may not launch this year despite it being spotted alongside the Pixel 6 family and Pixel 5a. The report rightly points out that many Pixel phones have been spotted in such beta updates, but not many have been released, and the Passport may be another addition to this list. At this point, everything is speculation, and we need to wait for Google's official word.

It's worth mentioning that Google in the past used fish names as codenames for Pixel and Nexus devices, though this seems to have changed, and bird names have taken over. The change in codename nomenclature may also hint at a drastic change in strategy by Google. Talking about codenames of upcoming devices, the Pixel 5a 5G is said Barbet, and the Pixel 6 series as Oriole and Raven.

In April this year, Google officially confirmed the existence of the Pixel 5a 5G, and the company went on to confirm that the phone will launch in the US and Japan. Considering the Pixel 4a was unveiled in August 2020, we can expect its successor to launch around a similar timeline. Another thing to watch out for will be the price. Google's "a" suffix devices are usually affordable, and Pixel 4a was launched at Rs 29,999. If the Pixel 5a makes a surprise entry into India, we can expect a price point around the Rs 30,000 mark.
