BRICS Summit 2026: India Secures New Delhi Declaration After Intense Negotiations

India has scored a major diplomatic win as the 18th BRICS Summit concluded in New Delhi with all 11 member countries adopting the New Delhi Declaration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the two-day summit, where Indian diplomats worked through difficult negotiations to build consensus on sensitive global issues. Talks reportedly continued until around 4 AM as negotiators worked on language related to the conflict in West Asia. Iran and the UAE eventually agreed to a compromise, clearing the way for unanimous adoption of the declaration. The document calls for restraint and de-escalation, peaceful resolution of disputes, dialogue, diplomacy, stronger multilateralism and respect for international law. PM Modi also raised concerns over the weaponisation of technology and critical minerals. With India’s BRICS presidency concluding, the chair has now been passed to China, which will host the grouping next year.
