FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani explains the proposed front-of-pack warning labels for foods high in sugar, salt and fat in an exclusive conversation with India Today Group’s Sneha Mordani. Punhani says the proposal includes prominent red warnings, with labels such as “high fat”, “high salt” and “high sugar”, in Hindi and regional languages. He explains that the framework is based on nutritional standards developed by ICMR-NIN and is being proposed in phases. Punhani also says the proposal is currently subject to the Supreme Court’s decision. He discusses why implementation may be phased and how the system aims to help consumers distinguish between products based on their nutritional profile.
