The drug menace, or ‘chitta’ crisis, is emerging as a major political flashpoint in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab’ Yatra in Jalandhar, promised to make Punjab drug-free by December 31, 2029, if the BJP comes to power. The BJP has accused the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government of failing to curb the drug trade. Congress has also attacked AAP over the issue, while the ruling party says its anti-drug campaign is already underway. Recent controversies, including the death of Gulzar Singh, have further intensified the political debate over Punjab’s drug crisis.
