Satya Niketan PG Collapse: How Delhi Students Paid ₹15,000 To Live In A Death Trap

The collapse of a PG building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan has rocked the National Capital. On 6 September 2026, the under-renovation Hostel Daze came crumbling down, trapping dozens of students and burying with it the dreams of several families. Thousands of students from all over India come to study at Delhi University every year, and many of them find accommodation in the narrow lanes of Satya Niketan. The PG facility known as Hostel Daze charged a premium from middle-class students, yet still could not provide safety to the young lives living inside. Crumbling buildings, narrow passages and overcrowded rooms defined this neighbourhood, where students paid around ₹15,000 a bed to live inside what has now been exposed as a death trap. Nearly 50 students were packed into Hostel Daze, an ageing, five-decade-old structure operating as an unregulated boys’ PG. That such buildings continue to house dozens of students in the university belt, unchecked and unregulated, speaks to a rot far deeper than one collapsed building. Among the dead are Arpit Jaaj, a second-year B.Com student at ARSD College, and Akshat, a student at PGDAV College — two more names added to a growing list of young people who came to Delhi believing in a future, only to be buried under negligence. These students arrived with ambition, and their families saved money to fund those dreams. Between 2022 and 2025, nearly 100 people died in building collapses in Delhi. The latest incident reveals that nothing has changed since then.
