Speaking at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting in Manila, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that Washington remains open to diplomatic negotiations with Tehran to resolve the escalating Iran crisis. However, Rubio warned that Iran is not serious about talks and cautioned that Tehran's attempt to control the strategic Strait of Hormuz threatens global freedom of navigation and maritime trade routes. Stating that allowing a nation-state to dictate traffic in key waterways sets a dangerous global precedent, Rubio emphasized that the U.S. will take necessary measures to protect its interests and regional allies.
