Hydrogen train gets a speed push: Railways eyes 110 kmph operation

India’s first hydrogen-powered train may soon move faster than its current operational limit. Trials have already been completed at 120 kmph, and efforts are now underway to operate the train at up to 110 kmph.

Hydrogen Route

The train is already running on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, but its next route is yet to be decided. Railway officials are consulting stakeholders while examining technical requirements and arrangements for hydrogen fuel supply.

Cleaner Ride

Unlike conventional electric trains that draw power from overhead lines, the hydrogen train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The process produces water vapour and heat, with no combustion, smoke or tailpipe carbon emissions.

Sleeper Push

Hydrogen is not the only major change underway on Indian Railways. The first Vande Bharat sleeper train is operating between Howrah and Kamakhya, while four more have been completed. The Railways expects 11 additional sleeper trains this year.

AI Watch

Indian Railways is also bringing artificial intelligence into railway security. AI is being integrated with CCTV cameras at stations and on trains, while the Railways is separately working on measures to tackle the persistent problem of rats on trains.
