Blanket makeover
Passengers travelling in First AC on the Howrah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express will now find something different on their berths. Eastern Railway has replaced the familiar standard blankets with premium floral comforters from October 11, 2026. Introduced during the Durga Puja festive season, the change aims to make overnight journeys more comfortable while giving one of India's most prestigious trains a touch of luxury.

Hygiene upgrade
The biggest change is not just how the new comforters look, but how they will be maintained. Eastern Railway says the floral comforters will be thoroughly washed and sanitised after every round trip. This addresses a longstanding passenger concern about train bedding, particularly blankets that are not cleaned after every journey. Blanket controversy
Indian Railways has faced questions over blanket hygiene for years. Unlike bedsheets and pillow covers, conventional railway blankets are generally washed only once or twice a month, according to the report. Last year, the Ministry of Railways introduced a pilot scheme to provide covered blankets in AC coaches. Historic luxury
The Howrah-New Delhi Rajdhani is no ordinary train. Launched on March 3, 1969, it was India's first Rajdhani Express, connecting Kolkata with the national capital. Today, it operates with 22 modern LHB coaches, including two First AC coaches. The floral comforter initiative adds another upgrade to a train that has evolved considerably since its debut more than five decades ago. (Image: Eastern Railway)
