When it was launched in 2011, the Seagate GoFlex Satellite was a real cutting-edge device, letting you access your files wirelessly from mobile devices. A couple of years later, Seagate has upgraded its technology with apps for Android devices as well as support for HD movies.
The new Seagate Wireless Plus looks like any other external hard drive from the company. It is small enough to fit inside your coat pocket if needed, though it needs a strip like dock to connect to the USB cable. It has a power button at the side, which also activates the wireless. The device creates a wi-fi network of its own and this is indicated by the blue LED glowing solid. While you can copy files to the device using the USB, to access the content from an iOS or Android device you will need to download the Seagate Media app.
Once the app is downloaded just link your phone or tablet to the Seagate Wi-Fi and you are ready to go. The app has a different folder for the files on the 1TB hard drive and you can play them directly on a mobile device without any buffering. We tried linking up to three devices and faced no issues. However, when the device is low on power the Wi-Fi has a tendency to switch off itself. Similarly, we had trouble accessing the Wi-Fi as we were copying or editing some file on the hard drive.
We were really impressed by the fact that we could play files wirelessly on a
Lenovo all-in-one PC too. Here, as soon as we selected the Seagate Wi-Fi, a window opened up showing thumbnails of the files in the hard drive. Here too we were able to play full HD files without any buffering. The added advantage here is that you can play and open all types of files and are not limited by what your mobile can play.
Use this as your file dump which you can access from all your devices within a 30-metre range. Really, this is the future.
