His comment was a response to a viral post claiming Tesla had uncovered a “mathematical cheat code” that allows inexpensive 8-bit chips to run AI workloads typically reserved for far more powerful 32-bit processors.
Behind the hype is a newly surfaced Tesla patent that sheds light on how the company is rethinking the most fundamental problem in modern AI hardware: how to balance precision, power consumption, and cost.
Precision problem in autonomy
At the heart of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system and its Optimus humanoid robot lies a class of AI models called Transformers. These models rely on a technique known as Rotary Positional Encoding (RoPE) to understand where objects exist in space and time — critical for remembering a stop sign seen seconds ago or keeping a robot balanced while carrying a shifting load.
The catch is that RoPE calculations usually demand 32-bit floating-point precision, which consumes power, generates heat, and requires expensive silicon. Running those same calculations on fast, energy-efficient 8-bit hardware typically causes rounding errors that compound quickly, degrading perception and control.
Tesla’s mixed-precision workaround
Tesla’s patent outlines what it calls a “Mixed-Precision Bridge,” a system that allows low-power 8-bit hardware to safely handle math that would normally require 32-bit accuracy. Instead of pushing high-precision calculations through the entire chip, Tesla converts critical positional values into logarithmic form. These compressed representations can travel through narrow, power-efficient data paths without losing essential information.
To save time and energy, the system doesn’t calculate these logarithms on the fly. It pulls them from pre-computed lookup tables, keeping the data stable as it moves across the chip. Once the low-precision hardware finishes its work, a high-precision arithmetic unit reconstructs the original values using optimised mathematical techniques, including Taylor-series approximations streamlined through Horner’s method.

Remembering what the car can’t see
This precision matters most for “long-context” memory. Earlier autonomous systems could effectively forget objects once they disappeared from view. Tesla’s approach allows its AI to maintain a detailed world model for 30 seconds or more, keeping objects “pinned” to precise 3D coordinates even when temporarily occluded.
To make that feasible, the Elon Musk-owned EV maker also optimises the AI’s working memory, or KV-cache, by storing positional data in logarithmic form and using paged memory techniques. This reportedly cuts memory usage by half while allowing the system to track far more objects simultaneously.
Efficiency beyond vision
The patent goes further, describing hardware-level support for sparse data — skipping empty space in calculations to save energy — and logarithmic techniques for audio processing, enabling the system to detect sirens and collisions across a wide range of volumes using low-precision hardware.
Crucially, Tesla pairs this silicon design with quantisation-aware training, teaching its neural networks from the outset to operate within 8-bit constraints. This avoids the accuracy loss that often occurs when high-precision models are later compressed for deployment.
Strategic implications
Taken together, the “Mixed-Precision Bridge” points to more than a clever optimisation. It underpins Tesla’s next-generation AI5 chip, expected to deliver massive performance gains without being bottlenecked by memory bandwidth or thermal limits. For Optimus, which runs on a battery far smaller than an electric car’s, the approach could be the difference between a few hours of operation and a full work shift.
The patent also hints at a broader strategy: reducing dependence on GPU ecosystems like NVIDIA’s CUDA, enabling multiple foundry partners, and eventually pushing high-end AI to smaller, edge-based devices. In that vision, supercomputer-level perception and reasoning could run locally — on cars, robots, or even consumer electronics — without constant reliance on cloud data centers.
