Redmi confirms its first gaming phone, to be powered by Mediatek Dimensity 1200 SoC

Redmi has now become the latest phone maker to announce plans of using the powerful MediaTek chipset for a phone.

Redmi has confirmed its plans of launching a gaming smartphone -- the first for the company. The company has also revealed that the phone will be launched with MediaTek's latest Dimensity 1200 SoC, which also happens to be the same chipset it plans to use for the Redmi K40. With the announcement, Redmi now becomes the latest phone maker to announce plans of using the powerful MediaTek chipset for a phone. Earlier, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Realme have all confirmed plans of launching new smartphones based on the Dimensity 1200 SoC.

The information about the new phone was revealed by Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing who confirmed that the company will launch at least two smartphones with the latest MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. He made the announcement using his official Weibo account, where he confirmed Redmi is gearing up to launch its first gaming smartphone which will offer a flagship-grade e-sports experience. He further added that the phone will come with an aggressive price tag.

While there is little information about the device, we do know all there is to know about the new MediaTek chipset which comes with a host of interesting features. The chipset is the company's first 6nm chip and also the first to use the Cortex-A78 core.

The Dimensity 1200 is a powerful chip and comes with a configuration of 1+3+4 with a A78 core running at 3.0GHz paired with three more A78 cores at 2.6GHz and four more power-efficient A55 cores running at 2.0GHz. The Dimensity 1200 can handle up to 168 Hz displays and also offers a 5-core ISP which can handle camera sensors up to 200 MP. It also comes with staggered HDR support for 4K videos (three exposures are merged into a single frame), the dynamic range is increased by 40%.

This chip's CPU design uses quad-channel memory, and dual-channel UFS 3.1 storage with up to 1.7GB/s data throughput and ultra-responsive IO. Apart from this, the Dimensity 1200 incorporates Bluetooth 5.2 with LE Isochronous Channels, and new LC3 encoding, enabling Bluetooth LE Audio ready technology with Dual-Link True Wireless Stereo Audio.
