The World Health Organisation (WHO) is set to roll out an app which will help its users detect coronavirus. The app will be available on android as well as iOS, as per reports. For now, the developer's aim is to have the basic prototype of the app up and running by March 30.
The new app will reportedly be launched under the name WHO My Health. The name was suggested by a team of volunteer experts called the WHO Covid App Collective. The team consists of former Google and Microsoft employees as well as WHO advisors and ambassadors, along with other industry experts. The WHO app is being built as an open source.
The app is being designed to provide its users news, tips, alerts, and more to keep the user informed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this week, WHO launched its chatbot which is helping its users bust myths about coronavirus. WhatsApp has teamed up with the chatbot.
WHO My Health app will work on the lines of the chatbot and help its user self diagnosis to a certain extent if they have the symptoms of Covid-19. The app will also help its user with location tracing. On a grander scale of things, for the patients infected with Covid-19, the app may just trace the affected person's location to better understand the spread of the virus. This method was reportedly used by China, South Korea and Hong Kong to contain the spread of Covid-19.
The app will reportedly function in WHO's official six languages in its initial stages. These are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.
It is however not clear if the app will take location tracing forward because of privacy concerns.
WHO chatbot shares only verified information so that users have access to authentic news. The chatbot reportedly provides information related to the pandemic and guidance to its users. Users can use this chatbot to check the latest numbers and to get tips related to the pandemic.
Users can also access tools like frequently asked questions (FAQs), myth-busters, travel advice, latest news and links for donation. Users can send a Hi' to +41798931892 after saving the number to their contacts.
