Apple recently released iOS 17.4.1, an update focused on bug fixes and security enhancements for iPhones. This update follows the feature-rich iOS 17.4, which was released earlier this month and introduced features such as live transcripts for Apple Podcasts, improved battery information, and, most importantly, significant updates for EU users, including access to third-party app stores and alternative payment options.
Apple has emphasised the importance of this update for all users, although specific details about the addressed issues have not been disclosed. The update description states that it contains "critical bug fixes and security enhancements." Usually, Apple publishes detailed notes on updates, including Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) entries. However, according to CNET, Apple has suggested that these details might be delayed in being published online for iOS 17.4.1.
The latest iOS 17.4.1 update is now available globally for all iPhones starting with the iPhone XS and later models. This includes the recently released iPhone 15 series.
Apple released iOS 17.4 globally earlier this month, bringing a wave of updates designed to enrich the iPhone user experience.
One key addition is the expansion of the emoji keyboard. Users can now express themselves with new characters, including a mushroom emoji, a phoenix emoji, and shaking head emojis (both vertically for "yes" and horizontally for "no").
Apple Podcasts also received a significant upgrade with the introduction of transcripts. These transcripts, available in English, Spanish, French, and German, allow users to follow along with episodes in synchronised text. This feature is packed with functionality, including full-text reading, search capabilities, and seamless integration with accessibility features like Text Size and VoiceOver.
Additional enhancements include the ability to easily add discovered songs to Apple Music playlists directly from Podcasts. Siri also gains new skills, including the ability to announce messages in any supported language. For improved device security, Stolen Device Protection receives several enhancements.
In the European Union, iOS 17.4 introduces significant changes to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). EU users now have the freedom to access alternative app stores and payment methods, providing greater choice and flexibility. Furthermore, users can now select their preferred browser beyond Safari, with support for third-party browser engines and NFC access. This allows for contactless payments directly through third-party apps and banks within the European Economic Area (EEA). These updates demonstrate Apple's commitment to meeting regulatory requirements while prioritising user preferences and convenience.
