- WhatsApp will soon introduce a disappearing messages feature.
- The disappearing messages will vanish from the chat window in seven days.
- In FAQ, WhatsApp says disappearing messages should be sent only to trusted contacts.
WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to send disappearing messages. It is in the works for a while. Now the disappearing messages are coming top WhatsApp, and through a FAQ the chat app is explaining how the feature will work. The feature, once rolled out to WhatsApp users, will allow users to send messages that will disappear or expire -- from the chat window after seven days.
On its official website, WhatsApp notes, "You can send messages that disappear on WhatsApp by enabling disappearing messages. Once enabled, new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days. The most recent selection controls all messages in the chat. This setting won't affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat."
The option of disappearing messages in an individual chat can be enabled by any user. But in a group chat, only admins will be allowed to turn disappearing messages on or off.
As we mentioned, if users turn on disappearing messages option, the text will vanish after seven days. Meanwhile, if a user doesn't open the WhatsApp application in the phone, the message will certainly disappear in seven days but a preview of the message will be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened.
"If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with disappearing messages off, the message won't disappear in the forwarded chat. If a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be included in the backup. Disappearing messages will be deleted when a user restores from a backup", the company said on the FAQ page.
Users who are interested in exploring WhatsApp's disappearing messages need to know that even if you enable the option and think everything is gone in seven days, kindly note that other users part of a chat can easily forward, or take a screenshot, or save the message before it disappears.
This is why the company also warns that the latest disappearing messages feature should be used with trustworthy recipients.
Similarly, if a user sends any photos, videos and other media with disappearing messages turned on, it will disappear in the mentioned time period but will be saved on your phone's gallery if auto-download is on. In order to turn auto-download off, users need to go to WhatsApp Settings > Data and Storage Usage > Media auto-download.
In other words, it is different compared to Snapchat.
WhatsApp also shares the steps on how to enable disappearing messages. This means that the company will roll out the new feature very soon.
Once the feature rolls out, which could be within days now, here is how WhatsApp users will be able to enable the disappearing messages feature:
-- Open the WhatsApp chat on your device.
