M S Swaminathan, regarded as the Father of India's Green Revolution, passed away in Chennai at the age of 98, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable contributions to agriculture and food security. As an agronomist, agricultural scientist, and plant geneticist, Swaminathan orchestrated a social revolution through innovative policies that rescued India from the brink of famine during the 1960s. His pioneering work involved the development of high-yielding crop varieties tailored to India's diverse environmental conditions. These seeds were then disseminated among farmers, leading to significant increases in agricultural productivity. Born in 1925 in Kerala, Swaminathan held key positions as the director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). His illustrious career earned him numerous national and international awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Albert Einstein World Science Award, and the World Food Prize. India honoured him with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, among others. In 2021, he received the prestigious Kerala Shastra Puraskaram, further highlighting his enduring impact on agriculture and his nation. Swaminathan's legacy will continue to inspire future generations and stand as a testament to his visionary leadership in the field of agriculture.
