AIADMK faces a major political crisis as 30 rebel MLAs led by S.P. Velumani, C.V. Shanmugam and M.R. Vijayabaskar announced support to Vijay’s government in Tamil Nadu. The rebel faction rejected any possibility of aligning with the DMK and declared themselves the “real AIADMK,” naming Velumani as leader in the Assembly. AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami hit back strongly, calling the rebels opportunists seeking power and ministerial posts. The BJP also criticised the breakaway group. The dramatic split boosts Vijay ahead of the crucial floor test, with the support of rebel MLAs strengthening the TVK-led government’s chances of proving majority.
