France’s school protests have escalated into a nationwide confrontation, with students, teachers and parents taking to the streets over overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, deteriorating school buildings and what protesters call years of underinvestment. More than 6,100 people have been arrested since the protests began, with the majority reportedly minors, while hundreds of students and police officers have been injured. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has promised action on the protesters’ education demands while condemning violence. U.S. President Donald Trump has now weighed in, claiming the unrest is driven by “out of control mass migration” and saying it is about Islam rather than schools. The students’ publicly stated demands, however, have centred on education funding, staffing and school conditions.
