A fresh political controversy has erupted in Karnataka after minister Priyank Kharge wrote to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) seeking details about its legal status, registration, office bearers and funding. Kharge argued that an organisation of the RSS's scale and influence should function with greater transparency and comply with registration and tax norms. Responding to the demand, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat dismissed the move as a political gimmick, saying the organisation has functioned for over a century without such requirements. The row has opened a new front in Karnataka politics and could trigger a wider debate on the legal and financial accountability of socio-cultural organisations.
