Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the commissioning ceremony of Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Pratap at Goa Shipyard, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime and coastal security capabilities. Highlighting the government’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Defence Minister noted that more than 60 per cent of the materials used in the ship are indigenous, reflecting the true spirit of the Make in India initiative and the growing maturity of India’s defence industrial ecosystem. Designed primarily for pollution control, Samudra Pratap is a highly versatile platform capable of conducting search and rescue operations, coastal patrol missions, and maritime safety enforcement. With a displacement of 4,170 tonnes, a length of 115 metres, and a maximum speed of 22 knots, the ship demonstrates strong operational capability. It is equipped with advanced pollution detection systems, dedicated pollution response equipment, modern firefighting systems, and a helicopter hangar with aviation support, significantly enhancing its reach and effectiveness. The ship’s ability to operate stably in rough sea conditions makes it a crucial asset during real-life maritime emergencies. The Defence Minister emphasised that the Indian Coast Guard plays a multi-dimensional role, ranging from marine pollution response and coastal cleanliness to search and rescue missions and maritime law enforcement. Whenever a crisis arises at sea—be it an oil spill, fire, or threat to human life—the Coast Guard remains the first responder, safeguarding India’s vast maritime interests
