Mahindra Thar OG gets a serious makeover: More power, new tech and 4-wheel discs

Mahindra has launched the 2026 Thar in India with a starting price of ₹10.32 lakh. The updated three-door SUV gets more powerful engine options, revised styling, improved cabin materials, new suspension hardware and electric power steering, making this more than a cosmetic refresh.

Diesel Twist

The biggest mechanical addition is the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel automatic with rear-wheel drive. It gives buyers the option of a larger diesel engine and automatic gearbox without stepping up to a 4WD configuration. The diesel produces 150.1bhp and 330Nm.

Safety Boost

Mahindra has added disc brakes on all four wheels, front parking sensors and six airbags on hard-top models. The standard ESP 9.3 package brings vehicle dynamic control, traction control, rollover mitigation, hill-hold control and hill-descent control to the updated SUV.

Offroad Upgrade

The updated Thar gets a rear electronic locking differential that can be activated at the push of a button to help improve traction when the rear wheels have different levels of grip. Sand, Snow and Mud modes also alter traction, steering and accelerator responses.

Power Spread

The Thar now offers three engine choices. The 1.5-litre diesel makes 116.9bhp and 300Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel produces 150.1bhp and 330Nm. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol delivers 159.6bhp and 330Nm, with different manual, automatic, RWD and 4WD combinations available.
