Lootera, the period romance starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha, had a slow start at the box office on Friday, the first day of its release.

According to Boxofficeindia.com, the movie recorded collections of 30-35 per cent at multiplexes in metro cities but lower in other circles across the country.

Lootera will be competing with 'Policegiri', the Sanjay Dutt-starrer action movie, which also released on Friday.

Inspired from O Henry's 'The Last Leaf', Lootera is the uplifting story of two lovers, of heartbreak, betrayal and ultimate redemption. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane of 'Udaan' fame, it is co-produced by Phantom Films and Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Motion Pictures.

According to trade analysts, 'Lootera's' overall performance depends on how it manages to score during the first weekend. Like 'Raanjhanaa', the movie with the unusual storyline will have to convince viewers to come the theatres, they said.

Meanwhile, the film fraternity is already impressed with the movie. Bollywood took to Twitter to share views on the film:

KARAN JOHAR: Saw the superbly crafted and performed Lootera... Sonakshi Sinha is a revelation! All accolades for Vikram...team Phantom and team Balaji!(sic).

ANURAG KASHYAP: Such incredible response for Lootera. A filmmaker amongst us directors Vikramaditya Motwane.

KONKONA SEN SHARMA: Udaan director Vikramaditya comes back with a glorious second film Lootera. Can't wait to see what he will make next. Ranveer exceptional.

ADITI RAO HYDARI: Lootera...swooning. Ranveer, Sonakshi, Vikramaditya is epic! And so is the Dop (Director of Photography).

SHRUTI SETH: Just watched Lootera. Such a poignant story of love and longing. Superlative jobs by everyone, but the director deserves the loudest applause. (sic)"
