Atal Tunnel is the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet. It is built under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. It will be a blessing for  people of the Lahaul valley, who remain cut-off from the rest of the state for five to six months due to snowfall

Rohtang Project timeline

The tunnel which was earlier estimated to be completed in six years, has been completed in a span of ten years. It was to be ready by May 2020 but the pandemic stalled the work.

From Manali to Leh in 4 hours less

The strategically important tunnel will reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 kilometres, cutting the 479 km journey short by 4 hours

Safety

There are CCTV cameras at every 60 metres and emergency exit tunnels as well at every 500 metres inside the tunnel. Fire hydrants have been installed in case of any fire emergency. Its air quality will be monitored every 1 km.

Cost

The 9.02 km-long tunnel is built at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore. The cost of the tunnel has gone up twice since 2008. The deadline for completion has also been revised thrice.

Width of the tunnel

The tunnel is 10.5 metres wide, including 1-metre wide footpaths on both sides.

All-weather connectivity

The Atal Tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity from Himachal Pradesh to remote border areas of Ladakh. Snow galleries have been built on the approach road to the tunnel.
