The year that just went by (2013) witnessed the portable audio speakers gaining a lot of attraction. Be it a bonfire on the terrace, a picnic in a garden, or a camping holiday, music adds enthusiasm and fun to any occasion. While our phones and laptops can play our favourite tracks, the sound isn't all that powerful.

The compact portable speakers of yesterday lacked power. The new range of portable speakers these days continue to be compact, but what sets them apart from their predecessors is that they produce excellent sound. Most are Bluetooth-enabled and come with an internal battery to play music wirelessly for good five-plus hours. A look at the best ones available today:

1. JBL Flip: Although JBL has already introduced the successor to this speaker, the Flip will continue to be my favourite. This cylindrical-shaped speaker can be placed on any surface in both horizontal and vertical positions. Other than Bluetooth, it has an auxiliary port too, which can be paired with a wire. The 40mm drivers and built-in bass port offer superb sound. At full volume, be it a small room or an open garden, the sound is very powerful. The only trouble is its proprietary charging jack.
Price: Rs 4,590

2. Portronics Pure Sound Pro BT: It scores over other portable speakers in terms of the number of connectivity options it offers. Other than Bluetooth, it can play music from an Aux, USB or even a memory card. It also has a built-in FM radio. The bar-shaped long speaker is sturdy and looks good when placed on a table. You can pick it and conveniently carry it along to any party.
Price: Rs 3,999

3. Soen Transit: Done in matte black, the straight line design of the Transit looks elegant. The kickstand means that it can stand on almost any surface. But it isn't the lightest portable speaker around. Weighing 500 grams, it definitely looks good and also offers good sound. For pairing devices, it has Bluetooth connectivity and auxiliary port. A single charge can give up to six hours of playback at full volume.
Price: Rs 12,999

4. SuperTooth HD: Technically, a Bluetooth car speaker, this can compensate for a good audio device too. Supporting A2DP, it can play music from a phone and can be hooked to any surface using the metallic clip it comes with. Weighing 112 grams, it packs in two speakers and supports a Bluetooth range of up to 10 metres. It can conveniently sit on the visor mount and can handle your calls daily.
Price: Rs 6,500

5. Bose SoundLink Mini: A name that offers unbelievable sound. The compact size makes it possible to carry it even in a jacket's pocket. At 680 grams, it packs in two new passive radiators along with the custom-designed high efficiency transducers to reproduce the entire range of frequencies. The sound is mesmerising, considering its small size.
Price: Rs 16,200
