Apple Spring event 2022: iPhone SE 3, iPad Air and everything else expected to launch

Apple's Spring event 2022 seems to be around the corner and rumours surfaced till now suggest that Apple may announce a range of products across its portfolio on the day. A new iPhone, upgraded iPad, software updates and more, here is what we expect to see at Apple's first launch event for the year 2022.

Story highlights
  • Apple Spring event is expected to take place on March 8
  • Invites for the event are likely to be sent out today
  • Apple fans anticipate the launch of the iPhone SE 3, the next affordable iPhone with the new-age hardware

Apple is likely to host its first launch event of the year soon and while the exact timing for it has not yet been confirmed by the company, leaks to date suggest March 8 to be the due date for the Apple Spring Event. The speculations are strong, and it is widely believed that the invites for the Apple event will be sent out today itself. From what we have heard, Apple will unveil the affordable iPhone SE 3, a new iPad Air, and a couple of Mac computers at the event.

The March date does not coincide with Apple's Spring event 2021, which was held in the month of April last year. However, Apple has historically held its Spring event in March, and is thus expected to schedule the event early in 2022. It is likely that it will be an online affair like the previous year. While we wait for Apple's announcement, let's take a quick look at all the products expected to debut at the Apple Spring event 2022.

iPhone SE 3

The iPhone SE 3 is expected to succeed the iPhone SE that launched in 2020. For those unaware, Apple's SE lineup caters to a slightly affordable segment. The original iPhone SE was launched in 2016 and then after 4 years, Apple refreshed it with the iPhone SE 2020 model. So this will be the third iPhone SE, that is, if it arrives at all. According to previous leaks around it, iPhone SE 3 will carry the same design as its predecessor. Thus, we can expect to see a huge bezel area at the top and the bottom, as well as iPhone's iconic Touch ID. While the design is not changing, we expect to see improved components inside it. For instance, iPhone SE 3 may get an A15 Bionic chipset, a higher capacity battery, and support for 5G.

iPad Air

Apple updated the iPad and iPad Mini last year and rumors suggest that it's about time for an iPad Air upgrade. The new model is expected to feature Apple's latest A15 Bionic chipset. Along with this, it is said to offer 5G connectivity options.

In a recent report, the Japanese website Mac Otakara revealed that the new iPad Air aka the iPad Air 5 will have similar specifications to the iPad Mini. So it may feature a 12-megapixel ultra-wide front camera with center stage, and a Quad-LED True Tone flash. Besides this, iPad Air 5 may get a quad-speaker system and dual rear cameras with LiDAR.

Mac Mini

Apple analyst Mark Gurman believes that Apple will unveil a new Mac Mini or possibly two at the event. He says that the new Mac Mini will be equipped with a more powerful M1 Pro chipset that shipped with the latest MacBook Pro. Some reports suggest that the upcoming Mac Mini will be called Mac Mini Pro. This seems likely considering the M1 Pro will bring big performance improvements to the refreshed Mac mini. Plus it will be easy for users to differentiate it from the baseline Mac Mini. Besides the chipset, it is expected to be offered in a compact design with flexiglass material on top and more port options than before.

MacBook Pro M2

Apple usually saves its headline-grabbing products for a later date in the year. However, Mark Gurman states that the MacBook Pro M2 may arrive early at the spring event this year. Apple refreshed the design of the MacBook Pros last year, thus the new MacBook Pro could launch in the same design. While on the inside, it may feature a more powerful M2 chipset. This chipset is likely to run at a higher clock speed than the M1 and bring more GPU cores. Sadly it won't get the Mini LED display that featured on the new MacBook Pro, Gurman claims.

We also expect Apple to feature its iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 updates at the Spring event. So it is clear that Apple will have a hefty line of products waiting for their global premiere on the day. We will be sharing all the updates on these Apple devices till the buildup as well as on the day of the launch. So make sure you stay tuned to India Today Tech for more on Apple's 2022 devices.
