Petrol for highways, battery for daily commutes: What Indian families should know about the upcoming BYD Seal U

BYD India has said the Seal U SUV is the first model it is considering for its Indian plug-in-hybrid entry, with a launch targeted within 2026. The company has not announced an exact launch date. This is a PHEV, so it combines a rechargeable battery with a petrol engine.

BYD describes DM-i as an electric-first system: the battery and electric motor handle most normal driving, while the petrol engine supports efficiency and extends range when required. How often the engine starts will depend on battery charge, speed, temperature and driving demand.

BYD says DM-i vehicles can exceed 1,200 km using a full battery and a full fuel tank. The company also said it would publish the Seal U’s exact range when the model is announced. Until then, the figure should not be presented as an ARAI-tested India range or a guaranteed real-world result.

A plug-in hybrid delivers its biggest daily-fuel benefit when the owner charges it regularly. BYD’s India executive said a person driving about 50 km a day with home or workplace charging could remain mostly in EV mode. Without regular charging, the petrol engine has to do more work.

Overseas Seal U and Sealion 6 versions use different engines, batteries, drivetrains and equipment. Claims such as a 26.6kWh battery, 140 km EV-only range, 336hp output or a 15.6-inch screen describe particular global variants. BYD has not confirmed that complete package for India.

BYD India confirmed that the Seal U would be imported, while declining to discuss future localisation. An imported launch can affect pricing, but no India price, variant list, battery warranty or homologated efficiency figure has been released. Buyers should wait for the official India specification sheet.
