The Defence Ministry has approved the transfer of DRDO-developed technology for conventional missile systems to private industry, marking a major push for defence indigenisation. India Today’s Shivani Sharma explains that the move could allow private companies and MSMEs already active in the defence sector to develop technologies related to conventional missile systems, subject to required standards, quality checks and procedures. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s approval could expand private-sector participation and strengthen India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem. The decision also aligns with the government’s broader push to reduce dependence on imports and promote indigenous defence capabilities, potentially creating new opportunities for private defence companies.
