Nirmala Sitharaman, Honourable Finance Minister of India, addressed a special event commemorating 150 years of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), a financial institution that predates India's independence and had already established its presence during British rule. Speaking at the event, she highlighted BSE’s remarkable transformation over the decades—from a historic trading floor to one of the world’s most technologically advanced stock exchanges. Today, BSE has the capacity to process an astounding 1,500 crore orders per day and up to 14 lakh orders every second. With an average transaction speed of less than 200 microseconds, the exchange operates at a scale that mirrors India’s vast population. This 150-year-old institution has successfully embraced innovation and digital infrastructure, setting a global benchmark for efficiency, speed, and scalability. The world now looks to India’s stock market not just for its size, but for its ability to evolve and lead.
