Just when India – US tensions seemed to be easing, President Donald Trump hinted at a fresh tariff strike — this time targeting India’s agriculture sector. After meeting US farmers and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Trump unveiled a $12-billion aid package while farmers urged him to crack down on what they call “cheap agricultural imports”. CEO Meryl Kennedy accused India of “dumping” rice in the US, even citing a WTO case. India’s Rice Exporters Federation refuted the allegations, saying shipments to the US are strictly demand-driven. With basmati and non-basmati exports rising, a new tariff could complicate trade ties already strained by US duties on Russian oil purchases. Despite Trump calling PM Modi a “good friend”, business with the US may be headed for rougher waters.
